Council Tenant Factsheet: understanding your tenancy type

Tamworth Borough Council offers different types of tenancies depending on your housing situation. This leaflet explains each tenancy type, so you know what to expect.

  • Temporary agreement while your tenancy application is being processed.
  • You can live in the property but do not have full occupant rights.
  • Usually used in emergency or transitional housing situations.

Secure Tenancy

  • You have long-term rights to stay in the property.
  • You can make improvements and may have the Right to Buy.
  • You must follow the tenancy agreement and pay rent on time.

Non-Secure Tenancy

  • Short-term tenancy with limited rights.
  • Often used for temporary accommodation or supported housing.
  • You may be asked to move when the support period ends.

5-Year Flexible Fixed Term Tenancy

  • You are granted a 5-year tenancy with a review before renewal.
  • Used for family homes or properties with adaptations.
  • Tenancy may be renewed unless your circumstances change.

2-Year Flexible Fixed Term Tenancy

  • You are granted a 2-year tenancy, usually for properties marked for redevelopment.
  • You will be supported to find alternative housing before the tenancy ends.
  • Review process starts 12 months before the end of the term.
