Council Tenants Factsheet: why maintaining your gas supply matters

Tamworth Borough Council strongly encourages all tenants to keep their gas supply connected and avoid having it capped off. When your gas supply is capped, you lose access to mains gas heating and hot water. This means you’ll need to make alternative arrangements for heating, cooking, and hot water, often at a higher cost and with added inconvenience. While temporary electric heaters can be provided, they are not a long-term solution and can increase your electricity bills significantly.

Why reconnecting your gas supply is essential

  • Comfort and Safety: Gas heating is one of the most efficient ways to keep your home warm during cold months. Heating your home efficiently during the colder months not only keeps you warm and comfortable but also helps protect your property from potential damage caused by prolonged exposure to cold conditions.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Gas is generally more affordable than relying solely on electric heating.
  • Health and Wellbeing: A warm home helps prevent health issues, especially for vulnerable tenants.

Annual Gas Inspections at your Home – Keeping you safe

Each year, the Council carries out a mandatory gas inspection at your home to ensure safety and compliance. You will be notified in writing of the date and time of your appointment. If the scheduled visit is inconvenient, it is your responsibility to contact us promptly to rearrange a suitable time.

Allowing access for annual gas inspection is essential for ensuring the safety of your home and everyone living in it. These checks help identify potential hazards such as leaks, faulty appliances, or ventilation issues. Regular inspections also ensure compliance with legal requirements and maintain the integrity of your home, preventing costly repairs in the future. By granting access, you enable the council to fulfil its responsibility as a landlord and protect your health and wellbeing.

Even if your gas supply is currently capped and not in use, Tamworth Borough Council is still required to carry out an annual gas safety inspection at your home. These annual checks are essential to ensure the safety of the installation and compliance with legal requirements.

Please make sure to allow access when your annual gas inspection appointment is scheduled or contact us on 01827 709403 promptly to rearrange if the time is inconvenient.
