Graffiti

We have a duty to remove graffiti from public spaces and council-owned property. Anyone caught graffitiing can be arrested and prosecuted under the Criminal Damage Act 1971 and could be fined up to £5000.

Reporting graffiti

We aim to remove:

  • Offensive graffiti within 24 hours of notification
  • Excessive graffiti with considerable detriment to the area within three working days of notification
  • Other graffiti, 10 working days from notification

Delays sometimes occur where graffiti is difficult to remove or needs specialist attention.

Please note we do not remove graffiti from privately-owned land or property. This includes canal side areas and bridges, railway property, electricity substations, cable boxes, privately-owned residences and commercial buildings.
