- Changes include cashless payment, updated parking stays, free stay extension on Bolebridge Street and Sunday charges
- Measures aim to improve reliability, reflect current parking demand and support essential council services
Tamworth Borough Council has initiated a statutory three-week period where people can comment on changes to Traffic Regulation Orders affecting council-owned car parks in Tamworth.
There are three key changes:
- Moving to cashless parking payments in all car parks, except Spinning School Lane car park, which will continue to offer a cash payment option.
- Changing the length of stay structure of selected car parks to better reflect how they are used. This includes amendments at Spinning School Lane, Lower Gungate and Church Lane car parks to introduce an all-day parking option.
- Introducing Sunday parking charges to bring Tamworth in line with other local councils.
- Extending the length of stay to 90 minutes free at Bolebridge Street.
The changes aim to make sure the council’s car parks better meet current demand, improve reliability for users, and help manage ongoing financial pressures.
Councillor Nova Arkney, portfolio holder for infrastructure and local economy for Tamworth Borough Council, said: “We’ve found that the current designations for some of our car parks are not right for how people are using them today, and we need to make changes to better reflect demand. Like many councils, we also need to generate additional income to help protect vital services.
“At the same time, our parking machines are continuously targeted by vandalism and theft, which is costly and disruptive. Moving to cashless payments in most car parks will improve reliability and reduce these ongoing issues.
“However, we recognise that some people still rely on cash, which is why Spinning School Lane car park will continue to offer a pay-with-cash option as the town’s biggest, most central car park and will have short and long stay options available.”
This process is part of the formal Traffic Regulation Order and will run for three weeks. Feedback on cashless payment options has already been sought from Age UK.
Blue Badge holders and council-issued parking permit holders will not be affected and there are no changes to Ankerside car park and other privately owned car parks.

The statutory period ends on Thursday 28 May 2026.
