On 23 January Tamworth Borough Council’s cabinet adopted a climate mitigation action plan and climate adaptation strategy, marking a significant step towards a sustainable and resilient future for the community.
The climate mitigation action plan and climate adaptation strategy outline the necessary steps for the council to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and steps to address key risks associated with global warming, such as flooding, heatwaves, wildfires, and drought.
The climate mitigation action plan outlines robust key actions to reduce emissions, including moving the council fleet to electric vehicles, optimising waste collection, and upgrading building energy efficiency. The plan also emphasises the importance of partnerships with external organisations such as the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and the Staffordshire Sustainability Board to implement these initiatives. Actions also include encouraging local communities to become involved in climate change events and campaigns in Tamworth and across Staffordshire.
The climate adaptation strategy outlines preventative actions to mitigate and prepare for climate change scenarios such as flooding, heatwaves, wildfires, and drought, making sure Tamworth's infrastructure and community is resilient to these climate change threats. The strategy also highlights the wider benefits of adapting to climate change such as improved health and wellbeing and reduced home energy use.
Councillor David Foster, portfolio holder for sustainability and waste said: "In adopting these plans, we’re outlining the steps needed for local action to build a sustainable future for Tamworth. We’ll work with local people to achieve our climate goals.
"These plans also provide a clear roadmap for reducing the council’s own carbon emissions and building resilience against climate impacts. We look forward to working with our partners and the community to implement these actions and make a positive difference."
