A new tree planting project is set to replace a damaged horse chestnut tree that sadly must be removed from McGregor Park.
An old large horse chestnut tree was vandalised by a deliberate car fire more than 10 years ago, causing damage to the base of the tree and a steady decline in the tree’s health. Tamworth Borough Council have been closely monitoring the tree since the vandalism, and sadly the tree must now be removed for public safety.
The tree is planned for felling this month. A new planting tribute will see 12 Sakura cherry trees that have been graciously gifted to Tamworth Borough Council from the Japanese embassy in the spirit of friendship and cooperation, will be planted where the horse chestnut stood.
These cherry trees will cover approximately the same footprint area as the chestnut and will provide a lovely show of colour scent and beautiful blossom in the spring.
Councillor Martin Summers, Portfolio holder for Environmental Health and Community Partnerships, said: “We were very saddened by the vandalism of this mature tree some years ago and have since monitored the tree’s health and safety of its location.
“Unfortunately, due to the extreme fire damaged to the base of the tree, it is now at risk of falling and could potentially injure those using the park; therefore, the tough decision has been made to remove the entire tree.
“We have explored the options to create a wooden carving from the felled tree, but due to the extensive damage to the tree causing deep root, this is not a sustainable option.
“The 12 new cherry trees will be planted to replace the old chestnut and be a beautiful replacement, adding to the peaceful park setting.”
