Today (16 July 2026), government have announced that two new councils will cover Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent from April 2028.

This will see two new unitary councils covering:

  • North Staffordshire, and
  • Southern and Mid Staffordshire

These two new councils will replace Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent’s ten existing county, city, district and borough councils including Tamworth. They will be responsible for all council services including housing, StreetScene, bins, education, children’s and adult social care, roads etc.

For Tamworth this means that all of us, along with the services we deliver will be delivered by Southern and Mid Staffordshire Council from April 2028.

Statement from Councillor Carol Dean, Leader of Tamworth Borough Council:

“A number of different proposals were put forward by councils across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, so it was inevitable that not every area would get its preferred outcome. This isn't the structure we proposed, but the government has made its decision, and our focus now is on working with councils across Staffordshire to make it work well for Tamworth residents.

“We engaged extensively with residents and businesses in developing our proposal, and that feedback, on wanting services that stay local and responsive, will continue to inform our approach as the new council takes shape.

“This is the start of a significant programme of work, and there is a great deal of detail still to be worked through. Alongside councils across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, we'll now focus on making this change work in practice.

“There will be no immediate changes to services. Residents should continue to access support in the same way as they do now, and we'll keep people informed as detailed plans are developed over the coming months.”
