On 24 February, it will be the two-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Tamworth Borough Council will join the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and other authorities in demonstrating our support for the people of Ukraine, by flying the Ukraine flag from Tamworth Castle and the council offices on Lichfield Street. In addition, the castle will be lit-up in blue and yellow on the 24 February.

The scheme has seen 22 Tamworth households hosting a Ukrainian guest or family. For more information on how you can help, go to Staffordshire County Council website: What is the Homes for Ukraine Scheme? - Staffordshire County Council

Since the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, thousands of Ukrainians have been killed defending their freedom from Russia’s appalling onslaught. Millions more have been forced from their homes, with 142,000 Ukrainians finding refuge in the UK under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme.

Councillor Tina Clements, Portfolio Holder for Engagement, Leisure and Events, said: “Ukrainians are facing the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of their country.

“With it being estimated that civilian casualties alone have reached more than 30,000, we think about the soldiers fighting and families affected. We light our castle blue and yellow as tribute to the courage of the Ukrainian people and demonstrate the UK’s unwavering solidarity with the country.

“The government is encouraging individuals and organisations across the UK to share support by using the hashtag #SlavaUkraini on social media.”
