- Street and town centre lighting project will deliver modern, energy-efficient LED and smart lighting systems.
- New lighting will provide significant reduction in energy consumption
- Supporting commitment to greener, more sustainable Tamworth
Tamworth Borough Council is taking a significant step forward in the regeneration of the town centre by investing in the upgrade of its street and public space lighting. Using the remaining allocation of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the council is replacing outdated, inefficient lighting systems with modern, energy-efficient LED and smart technologies.
The lighting upgrade will cost £140,629 to deliver, impacting more than 100 individual lighting installations across the town centre, including the Castle Grounds and St Editha’s Church.
It will provide brighter, more uniform illumination that enhances safety and creates welcoming public spaces for residents, visitors, and local businesses. Alongside safety benefits, the new systems will reduce energy consumption and costs, supporting the council’s ongoing commitment to a greener, more sustainable Tamworth.
Stephen Gabriel, chief executive for Tamworth Borough Council, said: "This lighting project represents an exciting investment in both the safety and sustainability of our town centre. By upgrading to modern, energy-efficient systems, we are not only reducing our environmental impact but also creating brighter, safer spaces for everyone to enjoy. It’s a clear example of our commitment to making Tamworth a more vibrant, welcoming place for residents and visitors alike."
Work on the installation started at the end of April and is expected to be completed by September 2026. The council is working closely with contractors to ensure minimal disruption to the public and local businesses, with plans in place for efficient and safe project delivery.
The project focuses on lighting assets owned and maintained by Tamworth Borough Council within the town centre and Castle Grounds. Residents should be aware that the majority of street lighting on roads throughout Tamworth, including many lights in the town centre, are owned and maintained by Staffordshire County Council.
This initiative forms part of Tamworth Borough Council’s wider town centre regeneration program, reinforcing its vision for a safer, more sustainable, and economically vibrant town centre.
